Indexed universal life insurance (IUL) is permanent life insurance issued by international life insurers. Key Takeaways

Indexed universal life insurance (IUL) is permanent life insurance from international insurers, with a US dollar death benefit from US$1m and a cash value that earns index linked credits within a 0% floor and a cap; policy charges still apply, so cash value can fall. UAE residents, expatriates and Emiratis can hold IUL, personally or through an offshore trust or company where the insurer accepts it. The UAE does not levy income tax on individuals; tax in a home country or a future country of residence can still apply. Capital for Life specialises in IUL and PPLI for internationally mobile families and the advisers who serve them. Information, not advice.

Can I buy IUL while living in Dubai?Yes. UAE residents, expatriates and Emiratis aged 18 to 79 can hold IUL from international insurers, with cover from US$1m.

Availability

Can UAE residents buy indexed universal life insurance?

Yes. UAE residents, expatriates and Emiratis can buy IUL from international life insurers. We are not aware of any UAE-based insurer that offers indexed universal life insurance.

Eligibility is set by your country of residence and the insurer's underwriting, not your nationality. Insurers accept applicants aged 18 to 79, and cover starts at US$1m of death benefit. There is no fixed upper limit for qualified applicants: large (jumbo) cases are structured across more than one insurer.

A policy can be owned personally, or by an offshore trust or company. Each insurer sets its own rules on which ownership routes it accepts for UAE residents, so the route is agreed before the application goes in.

Capital for Life specialises in IUL and PPLI for internationally mobile families and the advisers who serve them. Most of its business comes from the UAE and the Middle East, and its founder, Carlton Crabbe, is based in Dubai. The full guide to the product is what is indexed universal life insurance.

Top three uses

Why do UAE residents choose IUL?

The uses that lead are borrowing against the policy for property and business, retirement income alongside the end of service gratuity, and a defined US dollar legacy for family. Each is a structure to consider, not a recommendation.

Policy loans for property and business

Once cash value has built, you can borrow against it to buy property in Dubai or abroad, fund a business opportunity or pay school fees, and keep your investments in place. The loan is a contractual right under the policy, arranged with the insurer, and funds are typically available within days.

The policy stays in force while the loan runs. Loan interest applies, and any outstanding loan is deducted from the death benefit. See how IUL policy loans work.

Retirement income alongside the gratuity

Expatriate employees in the UAE rely mainly on the end of service gratuity their employer pays, which often falls short of long-term retirement needs. An IUL builds a second pool, in US dollars and outside any employer scheme.

You choose when to start drawing on it, at 50, 60 or later, usually through policy loans. See Income for Life.

A defined legacy for family

The death benefit is set from day one and paid in US dollars to the beneficiaries you name, in the shares you choose, or to the trust that owns the policy. Families use it to leave a defined sum to children who live in different countries.

See Family for Life and, for company owners, key person cover.

A Dubai property investor clears US$2.25m of bank loans with a policy loan.

A 60-year-old married investor in Dubai had US$3m to invest and US$2.25m of property loans costing US$155,650 a year in interest. He funded an IUL policy and used a policy loan from the insurer to clear the bank debt.

The insurer charges 5.75% on the loan and credits 4.50% on the amount borrowed, so the loan costs a net 1.25%: US$28,125 a year. Rental income pays the loan down. If he dies first, the death benefit settles any balance, so his family inherits the properties free of bank debt.

IUL and offshore bonds

IUL beside an offshore bond or PPLI

Many UAE investors already hold an offshore bond. An international IUL is also a life insurance policy issued outside the investor's home country, and for UK tax it is treated in the same way as an offshore bond. The difference is what sits inside: an offshore bond holds an investment portfolio, while an IUL holds a death benefit and a cash value that earns index linked credits. Offshore bonds and IUL compared.

Choose IUL if

  • You want a US dollar death benefit from US$1m alongside a cash value
  • You want index linked credits that cannot be negative
  • You expect to borrow against the policy for property, business or retirement income
  • You can fund premiums over several years

Choose an offshore bond or PPLI if

  • You want broad investment choice across funds, equities, ETFs and currencies
  • You want to place an existing portfolio, such as US shares, inside a structure
  • The investment portfolio, rather than the life cover, is the main purpose

IUL is a life insurance policy first, with credits earned inside the insurer's index accounts. Families who want open investment choice use private placement life insurance (PPLI) or an offshore bond instead, and some hold both for different jobs.

Mechanics

How does IUL work?

An IUL policy has two parts: a death benefit and a cash value. Premiums, after charges, build the cash value, which earns credits linked to an index such as the S&P 500, within a cap and a 0% floor.

The cap rate limits the credit in a strong year. The floor means a negative index year produces a nil credit instead of an index loss. Policy charges are deducted regardless, which is why cash value can still fall in a flat or negative year.

Once sufficient cash value has built, you can borrow against it. Fixed and participating loans behave differently in different index conditions. The death benefit is paid to your beneficiaries under the policy terms.

Can an IUL track the S&P 500 Shariah index?

Yes, where the insurer offers it. The S&P 500 Shariah can be used as the index behind an IUL index account, so credits follow the S&P 500 companies that pass Shariah screens. Availability is confirmed in your illustration.

What the index screens out

The S&P 500 Shariah is a subset of the S&P 500. Companies with significant involvement in conventional financial services, alcohol, tobacco, gaming, pork, pornography and most conventional media are excluded.

Financial ratio screens then limit a company's total debt, its cash and interest-earning investments, and its receivables, each to 33% under the S&P Shariah index rules. A supervisory board of Islamic scholars oversees the rules. [4]

Why Gulf clients choose it

The index aligns the policy's index link with Islamic investment principles, and it suits non-Muslim clients who want an ethically screened index.

Excluding conventional banks and highly indebted companies tilts the index towards sectors such as technology and healthcare. That mix can hold up better in downturns led by financial stocks and lag when financial stocks lead a rally.

An IUL is not Shariah-compliant by default. Choosing the S&P 500 Shariah aligns the index link only.

Cost of cover · UAE

What does IUL cost for a UAE resident?

Planned premiums for US$1m of cover start from about US$11,000 a year on a 10-pay basis, for a non-smoker aged 30 to 39. The premium for your cover depends on your age, gender, health, smoker status, the death benefit and how the policy is funded.

Many clients pay US$100,000 or more a year to build more cash value. Premiums can be paid as a lump sum or over a set number of years, often 5 to 10. Paying over several years (multi-pay) is Carlton Crabbe's preferred route. Capital for Life can also arrange premium financing, where a lender advances part of the premium against the policy; interest costs and lender criteria apply. See premium financing for IUL.

For a policy owned personally by a UAE resident who is not taxed in another country, the UAE does not tax the policy's growth, loans or withdrawals. The UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, and an individual's personal investment income is outside UAE Corporate Tax. [1] [2]

Questions for your tax adviser

Outcomes depend on residence, citizenship, ownership and what you do with the policy over its life. Tax in a country of citizenship, a former home country or a future country of residence can still apply.

  1. Does your country of citizenship tax its citizens wherever they live?
  2. How will a future country of residence treat the policy's growth, loans and withdrawals once you move?
  3. Should ownership, personal, trust or company, be settled before a move?
  4. How is the death benefit treated in your beneficiaries' hands, where they live?
  5. If a UAE company owns the policy, how are premiums, loans and proceeds treated within its Corporate Tax position?

Capital for Life does not provide legal or tax advice. We prepare the policy facts your tax adviser needs and work alongside specialist tax advisers on cross border cases.

If you leave the UAE

The policy is portable. It stays in force and in US dollars wherever you live, and you keep access to its cash value and cover.

Your tax position follows your residence. Loans against the cash value often avoid a tax event, but that depends on the rules of your new country, so ownership and structure are reviewed before you move rather than after.

An offshore trust can hold the policy for internationally mobile families, where the insurer accepts it for UAE residents.

Estate planning

How does IUL fit estate planning in the UAE?

The death benefit is paid in US dollars to the beneficiaries named under the policy, or to the trust that owns it, alongside a registered will for your other UAE assets.

Named beneficiaries

You choose who receives the death benefit and in what shares.

Trust ownership

A policy held in trust supports planning across jurisdictions and privacy for beneficiaries, where the insurer accepts trust ownership for UAE residents.

US dollar payout

The death benefit is paid in US dollars, typically within 7 to 10 days of claim submission.

A registered will

Without a registered will, UAE law sets a default split of the estate. A registered will, such as a DIFC will, covers the UAE assets the policy does not.

The process

How do UAE residents apply for IUL?

Applying runs from a first consultation to policy issue and typically takes 8 to 12 weeks.

  1. Step 1: Consultation

Your objectives, age, health, residence and the cover you want.

  2. Step 2: Plan design

Illustrations from the insurers available for your profile, with premium and cover options side by side.

  3. Step 3: Application

Application forms, ownership documents and financial disclosure on source of wealth, assets and income.

  4. Step 4: Medical screening

Non-medical terms up to US$3m for healthy applicants under 55. Above that, blood tests, an ECG, a treadmill test and health history at an approved clinic in Dubai, booked at your convenience.

  5. Step 5: Approval and policy issue

The underwriting decision, the first premium and the policy documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

IUL for residents of Dubai and the wider UAE

Can I buy an indexed universal life insurance policy while living in Dubai?

Yes. UAE residents, expatriates and Emiratis can buy IUL from international life insurers, with cover from US$1m. We are not aware of any UAE-based insurer that offers indexed universal life insurance. Eligibility is set by your country of residence and the insurer's underwriting, not your nationality, and insurers accept applicants aged 18 to 79.

What is the minimum premium for IUL in the UAE?

Planned premiums for US$1m of cover start from about US$11,000 a year on a 10-pay basis, for a non-smoker aged 30 to 39. Many clients pay US$100,000 or more a year to build more cash value. The premium for your profile depends on your age, gender, health, smoker status, the death benefit and how the policy is funded, and a policy illustration shows the exact figures.

Do I need a medical to open an IUL from Dubai?

It depends on your age and the cover. Healthy applicants under 55 can be offered non-medical terms for up to US$3m of cover. Otherwise a medical is needed, which can include blood tests, an ECG, a treadmill test and a review of health history, at an approved clinic in Dubai. Insurers also ask for financial disclosure on source of wealth, assets and income.

Is the cash value growth in an IUL policy taxed in the UAE?

For a policy owned personally by a UAE resident who is not taxed in another country, no. The UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, and an individual's personal investment income is outside UAE Corporate Tax. Tax can still arise in a country of citizenship, a former home country or a future country of residence, and a policy owned by a UAE company sits within that company's Corporate Tax position. Capital for Life does not provide legal or tax advice.

What is the best life insurance in Dubai for high net worth individuals?

It depends on the job the cover has to do. For lifetime US dollar cover from US$1m with a cash value that can be borrowed against, indexed universal life from an international insurer is built for that purpose. Term cover suits a need for a fixed number of years, such as a mortgage, at a lower cost. A policy illustration compares the options on your own age, health and cover.

Can I borrow against my IUL policy to buy property in Dubai or abroad?

Yes, once sufficient cash value has built. A policy loan is a contractual right under the policy, arranged with the insurer, and the policy stays in force while the loan runs. Loan interest applies, and any outstanding loan is deducted from the death benefit. Fixed and participating loans behave differently in different index conditions.

Is premium financing available for IUL in the UAE?

Yes. Capital for Life can arrange premium financing, where a lender advances part of the premium against the policy. Interest costs and lender criteria apply. Carlton Crabbe's preferred route is multi-pay, where premiums are paid over a set number of years, and the two are set out side by side before any decision.

What happens to my IUL policy if I leave the UAE?

The policy stays in force and in US dollars wherever you live, and you keep access to its cash value and cover. Your tax position follows your residence, so the rules of your new country decide how growth, loans and withdrawals are taxed there. Ownership and structure are best reviewed before you move rather than after.

Can an IUL policy use the S&P 500 Shariah index?

Yes, where the insurer offers it. The S&P 500 Shariah can be used as the index behind an IUL index account, so credits follow S&P 500 companies that pass Shariah screens: no significant involvement in conventional financial services, alcohol, tobacco, gaming, pork, pornography or most conventional media, and limits on debt, cash and receivables. An IUL is not Shariah-compliant by default.

Can a business in Dubai insure its owner or a key person?

Yes. A company can own an IUL policy on a founder, partner or key executive, pay the premiums and receive the death benefit. The payout funds the business through the loss or a buy-sell agreement between shareholders, and the cash value builds as a company asset. Cover starts at US$1m, and healthy applicants under 55 can be offered non-medical terms up to US$3m.
